Week One: Lord; Day One: God Reveals His Name

Notes from today’s devotional passage:

Yahweh is not a God who is remote of aloof but One who is always near, intervening in history on behalf of His people. Knowledge of this name implies a covenant relationship.

Kyrios, in the New Testament, refers to an owner, emperor, king, father, husband or master. It can translate into the Hebrew titles: Yahweh, Adonay, Elohim. Before the crucifixion, Jesus was addressed as Kyrios much like being called “sir” rather than as an acknowledgment of Him as God. After the resurrection, it was used widely by believers.

1. What does this passage reveal about what was in the heart of God in regard to his people?


2. Moses’ reluctance is not hard to understand. Describe a time when you were similarly reluctant to do something you thought God was calling you to do.


3. Why do you think Moses asked God to reveal his name?

1. How does God’s idea of greatness differ from the usual definition?
